Can an RCT-treated tooth cause pain and graying of gums?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Three years ago, I had a severely decayed tooth that underwent root canal treatment. Today, I felt pain in the same tooth while drinking coffee. When I checked in the mirror, I noticed a grayish color where the tooth meets the gum. It is now slightly sore and aching. What could be causing this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

The gray area you are noticing near your gum may actually be an abscess or an infection, likely due to reinfection of your root canal-treated tooth. This can happen if bacteria have re-entered the tooth or surrounding tissue, leading to inflammation and pain.

To address this, you may need either a retreatment of the root canal or a course of antibiotics to control the infection. I can prescribe an antibiotic prophylaxis, which you should take for five to seven days. However, if the pain and discoloration persist after completing the medication, you will likely need to have the tooth re-treated to prevent further complications.

This condition should not be left untreated, as infections in the gums and teeth can spread or worsen over time. Please let me know if you have any allergies to medications or if you are currently taking any other treatments. I will ensure that any prescribed remedies are safe for you.

If the symptoms do not improve within a week, visiting a dentist for further evaluation and possible retreatment of the root canal will be necessary. Prompt action can help prevent more severe dental issues.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
