When is root canal treatment indicated for a decayed tooth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 32-year-old male, and I recently discovered that I have tooth decay in my upper right second molar. My dentist mentioned something about a root canal, but I am unsure about what that involves. Could you explain what a root canal is and what the procedure entails? Additionally, I want to ensure I maintain good oral hygiene to prevent future issues. What tips can you give me for keeping my teeth healthy?

Please advise.

Hello,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I can understand your concern.

Let me briefly explain root canal treatment. It is performed when:

  1. The dentist removes the infected pulp and nerve in the root of the tooth.
  2. Then, it cleans and shapes the inside of the root canal.
  3. Finally, fills and seals the space with filling.
  4. Afterward, your dentist will place a crown on the tooth to protect and restore its original function.

Here are some tips to improve oral hygiene:

  1. Get scaling and cleaning of teeth done once a year.
  2. Avoid soda drinks.
  3. Avoid alcohol.
  4. Limit consumption of sugary items.
  5. Rinse your mouth with saline water at night.
  6. Brush twice a day (after breakfast and before sleeping).

You can always come back and reach me at icliniq.com.

Thank you for consulting me.
