Will my eardrum injury recover naturally with medicines?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor

I am a 30-year-old male. My left eardrum ruptured due to an accident. I visited an ENT specialist today, and he prescribed Riconia silver IP and Folinext tablets for one month. He mentioned that if it does not heal with medicines, surgery may be needed.

My question is: Can a ruptured eardrum heal with these medicines alone? I want to avoid surgery if possible. If I take the medicines for two months instead of one, is there a chance my eardrum will heal completely? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

A ruptured eardrum usually heals on its own within a few weeks to a couple of months, as long as you keep the ear clean, dry, and protected from infection. Antibiotic ear drops (medicines that kill bacteria) help prevent or treat infections, which is important because infections can slow healing.

Riconia silver IP is a multivitamin and mineral supplement that supports your overall health, but does not directly repair the eardrum.

Folinext is a nutritional supplement that supports your immune system and general healing, but is also not a specific treatment for the rupture.

Doctors usually wait one to two months to see if the eardrum closes naturally with proper care. Surgery is only needed if:

  • The hole is large.
  • It does not heal on its own.
  • You get repeated ear infections.
  • You have ongoing hearing problems.

To help your eardrum heal without surgery:

  • Keep your ear dry (no water during bathing or swimming).
  • Do not insert earbuds, cotton buds, or oils into the ear.
  • Use prescribed antibiotic drops exactly as instructed.
  • Avoid forceful nose blowing, as this can push pressure into the ear.
  • Use painkillers if needed for discomfort.

If the eardrum still does not heal after a couple of months, the doctor may recommend tympanoplasty (a surgery to close the hole), which has a high success rate.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
