What time gap should I maintain between Breo Ellipta and Salbutamol?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

After taking Breo ellipta 200/25, there is concern about the timing for taking Salbutamol HFA. A past experience showed that taking Salbutamol HFA 30 minutes after Breo ellipta resulted in a heart rate of 120 bpm. Thus, there is uncertainty about the appropriate interval between the two medications to avoid adverse effects. My current medicines include Breo ellipta 200/25 and Salbutamol HFA. Kindly guide.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I use Breo ellipta 200 mcg Fluticasone / 25 mcg Vilanterol daily, while I take Salbutamol HFA 100 mcg only as needed.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Both medications can cause tachycardia, an increase in heart rate, as a side effect.

If you need to use Salbutamol inhalation, waiting for a gap of two hours after using Breo ellipta (Fluticasone furoate and Vilanterol trifenatate) is advisable. However, in urgent situations such as acute asthma attacks (sudden and severe episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing), I suggest you use Salbutamol inhalation even if it has not been two hours since using Breo ellipta. Salbutamol is a short-acting bronchodilator with effects lasting for two to four hours, so the tachycardia should subside after some time.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
