Is it safe to take Dutasteride daily for scalp psoriasis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have scalp psoriasis and am also experiencing hair loss due to androgenic alopecia. I underwent my first PRP session four days ago. The doctor has advised a total of eight PRP sessions along with medications such as Dutasteride 0.5 mg, and topical Minoxidil 5 % combined with Finasteride 0.1 %.

I am also using Sebolac shampoo and Neusoft lotion. Are there any side effects of taking Dutasteride daily? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

Managing scalp psoriasis along with androgenetic alopecia at a young age can feel stressful, especially when you are starting multiple treatments at the same time. Your concern about possible side effects is completely understandable.

In men, Dutasteride works by reducing Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that contributes to hair thinning in androgenetic alopecia (a genetic form of hair loss). When combined with topical Minoxidil and procedures such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, it often produces better and more sustained results. Based on what you have described, you are already on a well-planned and appropriate treatment regimen.

Regarding your concern about side effects, I will explain them openly and honestly. Dutasteride can generally be used daily without major problems. However, like any medication, it can have potential side effects. These occur in only about 10 to 20 percent of patients, and many of my own patients taking similar medications, such as Finasteride, have not experienced any side effects even after using them for more than one year.

The possible side effects include reduced sexual desire, difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, or a decrease in semen volume. These effects occur in a small percentage of patients.

Some individuals may experience mild breast tenderness or slight breast enlargement, and very rarely, mood-related changes such as low mood or anxiety.

Importantly, these side effects are reversible after stopping the medication.

Dutasteride does not usually affect general health, and it does not cause damage to the liver or kidneys in healthy individuals when taken as prescribed.

Using PRP therapy, topical Minoxidil, and oral medication together is a standard, evidence-based approach for treating androgenetic alopecia. Results take time and usually become noticeable only after several months, so patience and consistency are essential.

Sebolic shampoo and soothing moisturizers such as Neusoft lotion are appropriate for managing scalp psoriasis and dryness. They do not interact negatively with Dutasteride and are safe to use alongside your hair loss treatment.

If you notice any troubling symptoms, especially sexual side effects, mood changes, or breast discomfort, please consult your doctor early so that the dosage or treatment plan can be adjusted if needed.

I hope this information addresses your concerns.

Kindly revert if there are any queries.

Thank you.
