How can someone with schizophrenia be managed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My husband has schizophrenia and often behaves violently, despite being on medication and receiving psychological therapy. His aggression persists, and I am at my wit's end. His friends suggest admitting him to a mental health center, which worries me deeply. I am torn between keeping him at home and considering institutional care. How can I manage his violent outbursts more effectively? Are there alternative treatments or therapies we have not explored? What are the pros and cons of admitting him to a mental health facility? How might this impact his cognitive abilities and overall well-being? I am desperate for guidance on how to best support him while ensuring our safety. What should I do?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern about your husband.

He has schizophrenia. You have not mentioned the details of the medication that you have given to your husband; otherwise, there are medications that can help him to calm down. There are no alternative treatments for it. If your husband is working and functional, then you should not admit him to a mental health hospital for a long time. But if he is not working and has behavior disturbance, then it is better to admit him to the hospital. There are private hospitals for this. They take enough care of him. You can not manage him at home if he is violent.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
