Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 32, male, and constantly have sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and itchy eyes, especially during certain seasons or when exposed to dust and pollen. Over-the-counter antihistamines help a little but do not fully control my symptoms. I also sometimes feel fatigued because of poor sleep from congestion. Are there effective long-term treatments to prevent flare-ups, and what can I use during severe allergy attacks?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have reviewed your query and understand your concern.
The goal of long-term treatment is to reduce your sensitivity to allergens and prevent symptoms from starting. I would suggest:
Nasal corticosteroid sprays such as Flonase (Fluticasone), Nasacort (Triamcinolone) are most effective for allergic rhinitis. They reduce nasal inflammation and work best when used daily throughout allergy season. Effects start in a few days.
Combine with a daily non-drowsy antihistamine (Diphenhydramine) for better control.
Allergy-proof your home: Use HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters, keep windows shut, and shower after outdoor exposure to remove pollen.
For severe attacks:
Short-term decongestants like Pseudoephedrine help with congestion.
Antihistamine eye drops, like Ketotifen fumarate, for itchy eyes.
If symptoms remain severe, consult your doctor about allergy testing and immunotherapy (allergy shots), which can give long-term relief.
I hope this information is helpful.
Thank you.
