What can delay conceiving the second time with normal reports and periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a second infertility issue. My first baby was born five years ago, and for the past three years, we have been planning for the baby but I have not conceived. We have undergone all tests but everything is normal. I have my regular periods. What would be the problem?

Hello,

Welcome to Icliniq.com

Thank you for your question. It would be best if I can review all the tests you have done as many factors affect fertility. Multiple factors in females as well as males can affect fertility. The frequency of penis-to-vaginal sexual intercourse could also affect fertility. Ideally, this should not be less than three times weekly for best results. Genital tract infections in both males and females could also impact fertility. This may need to be treated. Hormones like thyroid hormones being imbalanced could also impact fertility. Complications from previous surgeries for instance injuries to nearby structures during groin surgery in a male can impair fertility. For conception to occur sperm cells must meet the eggs, which can only occur when a woman is ovulating. You can average your body temperature over your menstrual cycle. Ovulation usually causes a rise of 0.5 degree Celsius in temperature. On the day your body temperature is elevated you could plan to have sex with your husband to increase the chances of conception. I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.
