Will my seizures return after 5 seizure-free years at age 54?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
It has been five years since my last seizure, and my neurologist recently started slowly taking me off my medication because things have been so stable. Honestly, I was so relieved, but now I am anxious all the time.
- What if my seizures return after five quiet years? I am 54, I live alone, and I drive to work every day. I do not have anyone nearby if something happens to me.
- Are there any warning signs I should watch out for, or any way to know whether it is still safe for me to drive?
Please advise.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I will guide you regarding your concerns.
It is completely understandable to feel anxious during this transition. After being seizure-free for five years, many individuals are able to successfully taper off their anti-seizure medication under the supervision of their neurologist. However, there is still a small risk of seizure recurrence, which is why the medication is being reduced gradually and monitored carefully.
Watch out for any symptoms which might have been warning signs before. This can be anything from unusual feeling sensations, vision problems, staring spells, confusion, jerking movements, periods of loss of awareness, or any other symptoms which have previously been experienced prior to the seizure.
Regarding driving, the safest approach is to follow your neurologist’s recommendations as well as the driving regulations in your local area. Since driving safety is closely linked to seizure control, it is important to remain vigilant during the medication tapering period.
Continue taking your medication exactly as prescribed, maintain a regular sleep schedule, manage stress, and avoid abruptly stopping the medication. If you experience any concerning symptoms or suspect a seizure may be occurring, stop driving immediately and seek medical advice.
I hope you find this reply helpful.
Thank you.
