Can GLP-1 medicine help with diabetes management?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was approved for gastric bypass primarily for diabetes management (BMI only 33), but the endocrinologist just mentioned new GLP-1 medications might give similar metabolic benefits without surgery. A1C currently 10.1 despite maximum oral medications and long-acting insulin. Surgery is scheduled next month after a year-long insurance battle. In simple terms, could these new injections really match surgical results for diabetes remission? Are success rates comparable? The endocrinologist seemed uncertain about head-to-head comparisons. I am also worried about permanent surgical changes if newer, better medications continue emerging. I need a practical decision framework comparing permanent anatomical changes versus potentially lifelong injection therapy for diabetes management.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Compounded Semaglutide is not FDA (Food and Drug Administration)-approved, which means its safety, effectiveness, and quality can vary. It may not be genuinely equivalent to FDA-approved versions like Wegovy or Ozempic (Semaglutide). Specific safety concerns include potential contamination, incorrect dosing, and lack of consistent quality control.

When considering compounded medications, inquire about the pharmacy's quality standards, including:

  1. Accreditation by the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB).

  2. Use of high-quality ingredients.

  3. Sterility and stability testing.

Given your health conditions, consulting with an endocrinologist before starting any new medication is crucial.

Please book a consultation with me if you would like more detailed information on any of these points or if you have other questions.

I hope this has helped you.

Please feel free to reach out to me again if you have further queries.

Thank you.
