Can Semaglutide improve liver function?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) a few months ago, and my doctor suggested that I try compounded Semaglutide to aid in weight loss. I read that losing weight can benefit the liver, but will this medication actually improve my liver function as well? Or is it only intended for diabetes and weight loss? Should I be doing anything else while taking this medication, such as modifying my diet or undergoing regular liver tests? I just want to ensure that my liver condition does not worsen.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Weight loss is highly beneficial for managing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and Semaglutide can aid in that process. While Semaglutide is primarily used for diabetes and weight loss, studies have shown that losing weight can improve liver function and reduce liver fat, which may positively impact NAFLD.

In addition to taking Semaglutide, consider these steps to support your liver health:

  1. Follow a healthy diet: Focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Avoid sugary, fatty, and processed foods.
  2. Exercise regularly: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week to promote weight loss and enhance liver function.
  3. Monitor your liver health: Regular liver function tests can help track your progress and detect any potential issues early.
  4. Limit alcohol intake: Since alcohol can worsen liver damage, it is best to avoid or minimize consumption.

If you would like more detailed information on any of these points or have other questions, please feel free to book a consultation with me.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
