Is compounded Semaglutide considered safe for weight loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been using compounded Semaglutide for weight loss for three months and have lost 25 pounds, but I am now experiencing alarming symptoms. I have severe abdominal pain that doubles me over, constant diarrhea, and extreme fatigue. I even missed work twice last week. Additionally, I have noticed my heart racing randomly. The medication was prescribed after minimal testing. I started at a dose of 0.25 mg and am now at 1 mg weekly, but I am unsure if that is the appropriate dosing. My regular doctor seemed concerned when I mentioned that I was using a compounded version.

Should I seek emergency testing? What complications should I be on the lookout for? Is there any way to manage these side effects? Would it be better to switch to an FDA-approved version, even though my insurance would not cover it?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Since you have reported these symptoms after using compounded Semaglutide, it is important to note that medications not approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) may lack comprehensive information about potential side effects and their severity. Therefore, you should consult your physician to discuss switching to an FDA-approved treatment option.

Your symptoms, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, rapid heartbeat, and fatigue may be related to improper dosing of Semaglutide. It is essential to speak with your physician to determine the appropriate dosage. You should consider undergoing emergency testing, such as an abdominal ultrasound, serum electrolyte levels, and pancreatic enzyme tests.

Complications to monitor include:

  1. Dehydration due to diarrhea.
  2. Pancreatitis.
  3. Liver and kidney issues.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
