How to manage serotonin syndrome?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am taking 300 mg of Wellbutrin a day and accidentally consumed Garcinia cambogia extract (HCA) in a smoothie. About an hour later, I started feeling fuzzy and anxious. I am still feeling anxious and drowsy now. Is there a risk of serotonin syndrome?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am very sorry about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body's system. But do not worry. I am here to take care of you. Regarding your symptoms, Serotonin syndrome is unlikely in your case because Bupropion (Wellbutrin) does not significantly increase serotonin levels, and Garcinia cambogia (HCA) is not a strong serotonergic agent. However, Garcinia has been reported to have mild serotonergic activity, and some people may be sensitive to it. Your symptoms - fuzziness, anxiety, and drowsiness could be due to other factors that may require a laboratory intervention. I suggest you do a urine toxicology screening, reply to me with the result, and minimize the use of the prescribed drugs.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
