Can a septate hymen be misdiagnosed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently went to the gynecologist for the first time, and I have another appointment next week. I have had sexual trauma with penetration and bleeding. When the doctor tried to stick the speculum in, it was a pediatric one, and it did not go in. She tried to insert her fingers as well, but that did not go too well. She said I have a septate hymen and was questioning how my abuser got his penis into me. How is it possible it can be a misdiagnosis? I am 23 years old. And the penetration occurred at 12 and a half. Before that, penetration happened, but with smaller objects.

Please guide.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am truly sorry about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body. Please know that I am here to support you. Regarding your diagnosis of a septate hymen following a previous assault, I do not believe it is a misdiagnosis. It is possible that both you and your abuser were unaware of this congenital genital condition.

I would advise you to take two tablets of Acetaminophen 500 mg orally three times a day for one week to help manage the pain while you prepare for another speculum examination to assess your septate hymen. Please feel free to reach out if you have more concerns or questions. You can schedule a direct appointment or follow up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
