How to manage dry and peeling facial skin?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have dry skin on my face that peels and has flare-ups if I do not put lotion on. I know it is not a fungus because I have used antifungal creams, and that did not work. I want to know how I can clear up the dry skin for good.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Based on your description, you are most likely experiencing atopic dermatitis or seborrheic dermatitis, as both are common on the face.

To better understand your condition and reach an accurate diagnosis, I would like to know a few important pieces of information, such as the following:

  1. Please let me know when the dryness and peeling first started.
  2. I would also like to know exactly which parts of your face are involved, such as around the nose, cheeks, forehead, eyebrows, beard area, or chest, and whether you notice redness, itching, burning, or sensitivity along with the dryness.
  3. It would be helpful to understand your daily skin care routine, including the face wash or soap you use, how often you wash your face, and whether you use scrubs, acne products, shaving products, or any medicated creams.
  4. Please also mention if the condition worsens in certain situations, such as cold weather, air-conditioning, or stress.
  5. Let me know which medicines you have used so far.
  6. Additionally, please inform me if you have dandruff, a history of eczema or allergies, or any family history of skin problems.
  7. If possible, share clear, well-lit photographs of your face or images of the most affected areas.

Meanwhile, I am providing general management advice. I suggest you follow the instructions mentioned below:

  1. Use petroleum jelly on the affected areas twice a day.
  2. Use any fragrance-free, gentle soap.

The treatment of seborrheic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis is different, as one is due to overgrowth of the body’s own fungus and the other is a problem with the skin barrier. Please reply with the details so that I can guide you exactly on what you need.

I hope that this answers your query.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
