Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I need help with my niece. She is nine years old. She has had this condition for three to four years. The problem occurs when she is sleeping. She awoke suddenly in the middle of the night, ran to the door, and attempted to leave. If someone stops her, she returns to the bed and falls asleep again. If we ask her why she was running and what happened to her, she cannot respond, and she admits that she knows nothing. This happens all the time. I need to know what kind of problem this is. Is it a psychological problem? Is there any treatment for this?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Your niece most likely suffers from sleepwalking, a non-rapid eye movement condition. However, to confirm it and rule out any other possibilities. She must be investigated. Electroencephalogram and polysomnography are examples of investigations used in sleep studies. You should seek the assistance of a psychiatrist or contact me again once the results of the investigation are released. Until then, advise the niece to sleep on a regular schedule and ask family members not to try to wake her up in the middle of her sleepwalking but rather to guide her back to bed. Patients are typically difficult to awaken from that condition and bewildered after waking from that episode.
I hope that you got your answer.
Please let me know if you want some help.
Thank you.
