Can unhealthy dietary habits lead to sleep issues?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 36-year-old woman, not on any medication. However, I am struggling to fall asleep at night. I stay awake until midnight, and falling asleep takes a long time. Could this be due to my unhealthy dietary habits? I mostly eat processed and packaged foods. Does eating processed foods reduce sleep quality? Are they interlinked? What are the actual causes of reduced sleep? Will I be able to handle this issue? How can I improve my sleep quality? Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
We feel glad that you reached out to us.
Sleep issues can arise from various factors, including diet.
Your diet, mainly comprising processed and packaged foods, may play a significant role. These foods often contain high levels of sugar and unhealthy fats, which can disrupt sleep. Other contributing factors include:
-
Excessive screen time before bed.
-
Irregular sleep schedules.
-
Stress (tension).
-
An uncomfortable sleep environment.
If left unaddressed, poor sleep can lead to health issues such as impaired cognitive function (brain health), mood disorders, and cardiovascular problems.
I suggest a balanced diet with more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to improve sleep quality. Establish a consistent sleep schedule, develop a relaxing bedtime routine, and limit screen time before bedtime. Ensure your sleep environment is comfortable, dark, and relaxed. Regular exercise and stress management techniques like meditation can also be beneficial. If sleep problems persist, I suggest seeking advice from a healthcare provider in person.
I hope this helps.

Thank you.
