Why do breasts fail to develop normally in a 19-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 19-year-old female, 5 feet tall, weighing 86 pounds. My breasts are very small or nearly flat, which has been affecting my confidence and causing stress.

I have tried chest exercises, hormone-focused workouts, and home remedies like fenugreek seeds, but have not seen any improvement. I am concerned this could be due to hormonal imbalance or delayed development.

  1. Should I be worried?

  2. What tests or steps would you recommend to better understand and address this?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

It takes courage to speak up, and your concern is completely valid. At 19, your body may still be developing, but it is natural to compare yourself to others and feel worried when things seem different.

Small or flat breasts can be perfectly normal, especially with a naturally lean frame. However, if this is causing distress and there has been little to no development, or if your periods are irregular, very delayed, or absent, it is worth checking for a possible hormonal issue.

Factors like low body fat, genetics, or hormonal imbalances (such as low estrogen or conditions like delayed puberty or hypogonadism) could be involved. It is not something to panic about, but a medical evaluation can help.

I recommend consulting a gynecologist or endocrinologist. They may suggest hormone tests (estrogen, FSH, also known as Follicle-Stimulating Hormone; LH, also known as Luteinizing Hormone; prolactin, thyroid) and possibly a pelvic ultrasound to assess reproductive development.

Most importantly, breast size does not define your femininity or worth, though it is understandable to feel affected. You are not alone. Avoid unproven remedies, as they can do more harm than good. With the right support, you can better understand your body and feel more confident in your journey.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
