How can long-term smokers quit smoking successfully?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I started smoking when I was about 18 years old, and now I am 41 years old. I have tried to give up smoking many times, but never succeeded in doing so. Every single anti-smoking advertisement I see makes me feel like giving up once again, but I end up smoking just as much as before.

What helped those who smoked for years?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I understand how discouraging that can feel, especially after making several attempts to quit. The fact that you keep thinking about quitting is actually important because most people who successfully stop smoking have made several attempts before they find an approach that works for them.

Rather than relying on willpower alone, the highest success rates come from combining behavioral support with treatment like nicotine replacement therapy or prescription medications like Varenicline or Bupropion when they are appropriate.

Identifying your personal triggers, planning how to cope with cravings, removing cigarettes from your environment, and seeking support from your doctor, a smoking cessation program, or a counselor can also make a significant difference.

Even after smoking for more than 20 years, quitting brings substantial health benefits, with a reduced risk of heart disease, lung disease, and many cancers after you stop. Every quit attempt teaches you something about what works and what does not, so none of your previous efforts have been wasted, and there is still a very good chance that your next attempt could be the one that succeeds.

I hope this helps.

Revert in case of more queries.

Thank you.
