What can be done to make a child interested in solid foods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 18-month-old baby girl's weight is 16 lbs. She cannot eat anything but always want to breastfeed. I tried all sorts of food but she is not interested in anything. I also tried formula milk and cow milk but she does not like anything. What should I do to increase her weight? What can be done to make her interested in solid food? What food can be given to gain weight instantly? She has not started walking yet. She has only 3 small teeth. I am so worried about her. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Your baby is underweight and I think it is due to nutritional deficiency she is not walking yet. There is no magic medicine that increases baby weight unless you put effort into increasing her oral intake. Make a good diet chart for him. She should be on solid feeds by now. Give her tasty homemade khichdi, dal, yogurt, fruits, roti, etc. Mother has to put extra effort into such babies. Even if she wants to breastfeed avoid it until she finishes with the solids first. She might have developed a habit of breastfeeding otherwise by now his body demands are more than breastfeeding. Try giving him three main solid foods and three small snacks in between breastfeeding whenever she wants.

I hope it helps you. Thank you.
