What causes pain near Adam's apple during neck movements?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have pain on one side of my Adam's apple especially when I stretch my neck or press the bone above it and pain affects my ear also. I have been a smoker (on and off). There is no swelling in my throat but it pains when I rotate my neck on different angles or drink water. It has been around 10 days and the pain is only on one side. What could this be?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I cannot diagnose or provide medical advice without a physical examination. Still, based on the information you have provided, it sounds like you may be experiencing symptoms of cervicalgia, which is a condition that causes pain and stiffness in the neck. The pain you are describing near your Adam's apple and in your ear could be referred to as pain, which is pain that is felt in a different location from where the actual problem is. It is important to see a healthcare provider if you are experiencing persistent neck pain, as there are many potential causes of neck pain, some of which may require medical treatment. Your healthcare provider can help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and develop a treatment plan that's appropriate for your individual needs. In the meantime, here are some strategies that may help manage your symptoms:

1. Practice good posture: Make sure you are sitting and standing with good posture to help reduce strain on your neck muscles. Avoid slouching or hunching forward for prolonged periods.

2. Stretch your neck: Gently stretch your neck muscles to help relieve tension and stiffness. Be careful not to overstretch or strain the muscles.

3. Apply heat or ice: Applying a warm compress or an ice pack to the affected area can help reduce pain and inflammation.

4. Avoid smoking: Smoking can contribute to neck pain and stiffness, as it restricts blood flow to the neck muscles and impairs their ability to heal. Quitting smoking (or avoiding smoking altogether) can help improve overall neck health.

5. Communicate with your healthcare provider: If your symptoms persist or worsen, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about any concerns or questions you may have about your condition or treatment options. This will help ensure that you are receiving the best possible care for your individual needs and circumstances.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
