What are the causes of persistent throat pain in teenagers?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 18 years old, and I have been having such a sore throat for the longest time, and it never seems to go away. I do not know how to explain it, but it feels like my throat has a sore lump pushing on my throat, and I have also been yawning a lot.

I have been trying to see a doctor, but my parents have not taken me and suggest it is probably nothing, but I have a bad gut feeling.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern

I am very sorry about your medical condition and I am glad that it is good that you are paying attention to changes in your body. But do not worry, I am here to take care of you. Regarding your symptoms, I believe you have developed an acute pharyngotonsillitis, an inflammatory disease of the throat and tonsil due to a bacterial or viral infection. Have you completed your immunizations?

Please do a throat swab test and reply to me with the result, and please take the following:

  1. Two tablets of Cotrimoxazole 400 milligrams (Septrin) orally thrice daily for one week.

  2. 2 tablets of Co-Amoxiclav 625 milligrams (Amoxicillin) orally twice daily for one week.

  3. One tablet of Ibuprofen 400 milligrams (NSAIDs) PO bid for one week.

  4. Two Tablets vitamin C 1000 IU orally PO thrice daily for one week.

If your symptoms persist, schedule another appointment for follow-up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

Take care.
