Is it possible to have back spasms from a pre-existing spinal injury?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Nine years ago, I went to the emergency room because I had muscle cramping and spasm in my back. I got the treatment. There were eight muscle relaxer pills. The problem went away.

After two years, I had an injury at work. The next day I could not walk without the assistance of a walker. I damaged L5 and L4 disks, dropped my foot (left side), and had a tingling feeling throughout my hips and left leg. The treatment was surgery on L4 and L5. I still have the drop foot, tingling, and I can not have an erection.

My insurance company is trying to claim that the injury is pre-existing because of the previous muscle spasms. My back injury seven years ago came from being severely jarred around.

My question to you is, in your opinion, would you consider back spasms from two years ago pre-existing to a spinal injury?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Back muscle spasms can occur without a disc problem like a muscle strain, in which case a prolapsed disc is not related. A disc prolapse can be acute or chronic types. So, it cannot be related to a previous injury you had nine years ago unless an MRI scan was done at that time showing a disc bulge.

This is my opinion. This professional advice provided by me stands subject to the actual. Examination of the report and image (attachment removed for patient identity protection) is based entirely on my inputs. It should be correlated with clinical findings.

Thank you.
