Can steroid injections cause spotting or soreness?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I just had some spotting of bright red blood after urinating. I am postmenopausal and my vaginal wall is a little sore. I recently had steroid injections in my arm for tendinitis. I have anxiety, could it be something serious like cancer?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Regarding your symptoms, I understand peeing blood in your post-menopausal period can create anxiety and fear. However, I think this bloody peeing is related to the recent steroid injection you took, which can cause uterine contraction and endometrial shredding that might lead to a type of menstrual bleeding, as it is still evident that you can still be menstruating even after 52 years. In addition, I do not you have cancer because the color of the vagina's blood is brown and continuous. However, I may still advise you to do a colposcopy to rule out any malignancy. I hope this helps. Reply to me if you have more concerns or questions by scheduling a direct appointment or follow-up.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
