What are the causes of spotting, and how to manage it?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I think I have spots. I need someone to confirm them. They are not bothering me at all. I just do not like seeing them down there. It is scary to me, I am a very paranoid person altogether.

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Spotting or irregular vaginal bleeding can be caused by hormonal imbalance, infection, certain medication, stress, etc, so you need to find out the exact cause and act accordingly. You can follow these things:

  1. Always stay hydrated.

  2. Sleep well, and get adequate bed rest during periods.

  3. Manage stress.

  4. Try iron-rich foods like red meat, beans, eggs, and green vegetables, and vitamin C-rich foods like tomatoes, and citrus foods.

  5. If you have pelvic pain or fever, you must consult with a physician, as it may be from an infection, and you will need to take antibiotics for it.

  6. Though it is a common thing before periods to come, if you feel bothered, you may take tablet Tranexamic acid (500 milligrams) in the morning and night for three days, and tablet Norethisterone (5 milligrams) in the morning and night for 21 days, and then seven days off. This treatment must be done for three cycles.

Both medications should be started from the first day of your menstruation. If it is due to your hormonal imbalance, you may get cured by taking these. So, here the cause is an important factor.

I hope you understood. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you.
