What precautions can be taken to prevent St. Louis encephalitis virus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Multiple mosquito samples testing positive for St. Louis encephalitis virus around our area have been detected. From the information I have, this viral infection can cause inflammation of the brain and potentially lead to long-term neurological damage or even death in some cases. Sounds absolutely terrifying. My main question is, how much of a realistic threat does St. Louis encephalitis actually pose in affected areas? Is this just media fear-mongering or should we, as residents be on high alert? Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

HelloWelcome to iclinq.com. I can understand your concern.SLEV is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause St. Louis encephalitis, an infection that leads to inflammation of the brain. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most infections are asymptomatic or symptoms such as fever, headache, dizziness, and nausea.Severe cases can cause high fever, neck stiffness, disorientation, coma, tremors, and convulsions. SLEV cases are relatively rare. The elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to severe disease.I suggest you follow the below mentioned instructions.

  • Use insect repellent
  • Wear long sleeves and pants, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Eliminate standing water around homes to reduce mosquito breeding sites.
  • Follow the local health guidelines.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
