Can stem cell and PRP therapy help heal a meniscus tear?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 29-year-old competitive runner, and I tore my meniscus last year. My orthopedic surgeon mentioned that stem cell therapy might help with joint healing, but I have read mixed opinions on whether it actually regenerates cartilage. Is there solid evidence that it works for knee injuries, or is it mostly experimental? I also want to avoid surgery if possible. Could stem cells combined with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) be a better option? Lastly, are there any clinical trials I could consider, or is this only available in private clinics?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern.

Stem cell therapy for meniscus tears is still considered experimental. Initial studies suggest that it helps with inflammation and pain relief, but does not consistently regenerate cartilage. Full cartilage regeneration has not been reliably proven in human clinical trials.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is often combined with stem cells to enhance healing and reduce inflammation, but results vary. The most reliable treatment for a significant meniscus tear is still surgery, especially if there is mechanical knee instability. If you have a partial tear and want to avoid surgery, stem cells + PRP may help with symptom relief and improve recovery. However, if your meniscus tear is large or causing locking or catching, surgery is usually the best option to restore function.

Clinical trials are more evidence-based, whereas private clinics often lack standard protocols and can be expensive.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
