Is stem cell therapy suitable for my son with CAMT?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

We just received confirmation that my nine-year-old son, who has been diagnosed with congenital megakaryocytic thrombocytopenia (CAMT), may benefit from stem cell therapy. We are deeply hopeful, as his condition has been very difficult to manage. Despite ongoing treatments, his platelet count has not risen above 15,000, and he has been unable to participate in any physical activities at school due to the high risk of bleeding.

We would like to understand more about the treatment process. Will he need chemotherapy prior to undergoing stem cell therapy? If so, what does that typically involve for a child his age? Additionally, we are trying to plan and prepare what the typical duration of hospital stay is for children undergoing stem cell transplantation for CAMT.

Please help.

Hello

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern.

Congenital amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia (CAMT) is a rare, inherited disorder characterized by a severely low number of megakaryocytes, a type of bone marrow cell that makes platelets that are important for clotting and preventing bleeding. Before he gets blood stem cells, the doctors need to prepare his body to receive them. This is called the preparative regimen.

Once the transplant is finished, he'll need to stay in the hospital for a few weeks while he waits for the stem cells to settle in his bone marrow and start producing new blood cells. During this period, he may feel weak and experience diarrhea, vomiting, and/or a loss of appetite. Dangerous internal bleeding can occur when your platelet count falls below 10,000 per microliter.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
