What is the treatment for my persistent stomach ache?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been suffering from stomach ache for a year, and I am not sure about the reason. I just wanted to know if there is any way to check if food is getting stuck in the stomach, intestines, or any part of the digestive system for a long time. I know it does not happen normally, but is there any way to check if there is a rare case like the one I have mentioned?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

You are suffering from gastroenteritis. I would initially suggest you go for a test called stool routine and microscopy. The presence of bacteria or protozoa in stool can be tested. Sometimes infection by toxic bacteria destroys natural gut flora (good bacteria like Lactobacillus) and can cause loose motion etc. Gastroenteritis usually presents with symptoms like bloating, belching, loose stools, vomiting, nausea, weakness, etc. However, it is not necessary that all the symptoms are always present in every patient. So just because you are not feeling nausea and vomiting does not mean that you do not have gastroenteritis. I also suggest you do the following steps:

  1. Take a probiotic daily for a few days, along with Psyllium husk, two teaspoons before going to bed to add bulk to stools.

  2. Take a good quality probiotic like Saccharomyces boulardii three times a day for at least a week.

  3. Medications can be discussed with your gastroenterologist and consumed. In case of stool routine and sensitivity tests positive for bacteria or protozoa, Cefixime and Ornidazole could be taken for seven days.

I hope this helps you.

Regards.
