Could my red, oily stool indicate a serious health issue?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have noticed red discoloration in my stool along with an oily layer on the toilet water. Could this indicate a serious health concern? I consume beetroot powder daily, but my stool does not always appear this way.

Please help.

Thank you for your guidance.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

A red color in your feces and an oily appearance in your toilet bowl can hardly go unnoticed, but this symptom does not always mean you have a serious medical condition. Taking beetroot powder is a common cause of red or pink-colored feces, which can fluctuate from day to day based on digestive speed and other foods in your diet.

The oily or shiny layer you have ever noticed is usually due to dietary fats or supplements, like fish oil, multivitamins, or iron, which affect the way stool looks and sometimes even leave a film on the water. Other medications, such as Buprenorphine, may also slow gut movement, affecting the consistency and appearance of the stool.

That said, blood in the stool is more concerning when persistent, appearing dark or black (tarry), mixed throughout, or coupled with other symptoms such as abdominal pain, weight loss, general fatigue, dizziness, or anemia. Bright red streaking around or on the surface of the stool can also be caused by benign conditions, including hemorrhoids or minor irritation of the rectum.

If the red coloration does not stop even after stopping beetroot powder for several days, or if oily stools turn out to be frequent, foul-smelling, or accompanied by diarrhea or weight changes, it is necessary to consult a doctor. Stool tests and blood work may be required in order to eliminate the suspicion of bleeding or fat malabsorption.

For now, monitoring your symptoms, considering a temporary pause of beetroot powder, and seeking medical care if bleeding worsens or you feel unwell is a prudent approach.

I hope the information helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
