What could be the cause of breastfeeding newborn stool changes and anus rash?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son is 14 days old. He is breastfeeding. Whenever he feeds, he passes stools. In the beginning, the stool was yellow and pasty with a seedy texture. Now, his stool is runny, seedy, and yellow. Is there anything to worry about? Secondly, he is having a rash in the anal area. I apply a rash cream every time I clean and dry pat him with a tissue. Kindly let me know if this is something serious.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I can understand your concern.

It is normal for breastfeeding infants for their stools to change. Yellow, seedy, and runny stools are typical. But, watch for any dehydration, blood in stools, or fever. Secondly, rashes in the anal area can result from various causes, like irritation or infections. Your current care routine is a good start. Also, add zinc syrup of any brand and change his diapers immediately when he is dirty. But, if the rash persists or worsens, do consult a physician again.

I hope it clears up your worry. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

Thank you.
