I have an eye stye. How to treat and prevent it?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a stye just starting in my eye. I have a party tomorrow. What can I do to stop it from getting bigger or worse?

I had previously developed four styes in one month, but then they stopped with the use of Moxifloxacin ointment.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

A stye is an infection of the eyelid glands. Since yours is just beginning, simple steps can help prevent it from getting worse. So, kindly follow the instructions mentioned below:

  1. Apply a clean, warm cloth to the closed eyelid for five to 10 minutes, three to four times a day. Warm compression promotes early healing and reduces swelling.

  2. Wash your hands before touching your eyes, and avoid rubbing or squeezing the stye.

  3. As you responded well to Moxifloxacin ointment earlier, you may apply a thin layer to the eyelid margin two to three times daily, as directed.

For your party tomorrow, a consistent warm compress, along with the ointment, can help reduce discomfort and keep the swelling from worsening. If needed, you may take a simple pain reliever like Paracetamol (if not allergic). This will give you some relief.

If swelling increases, pain becomes severe, or vision is affected, I suggest you consult an eye specialist promptly. Since you have had repeated styes, a detailed eye check later is advisable to look for underlying causes such as oily glands, lash dandruff, or refractive errors.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Take care.
