What causes sweating and fast heartbeats after activity?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I sweat profusely after minimal physical activity, and I feel like my heart is beating very fast. I try to jog about 3.7 miles with my mouth closed, breathing only through my nose while running. This profuse sweating and rapid heartbeat started only about seven days ago. In addition, I experience slight headaches as well.

Please help me.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

The sudden onset of profuse sweating, rapid heartbeat after minimal exertion, and new-onset headaches over the past week is worth taking seriously, especially since these symptoms are new and not typical for you during exercise.

While sweating and an elevated heart rate can be normal responses to physical activity, a sudden change in your baseline, especially with only mild activity, may point to several possible issues, including:

  1. Dehydration or electrolyte imbalance.

  2. Anemia (low red blood cell count).

  3. Thyroid dysfunction (such as hyperthyroidism).

  4. Infection or inflammation.

  5. Cardiovascular concerns, such as arrhythmia or high blood pressure.

Running while keeping your mouth closed (nasal breathing) also increases the workload on your body, but it should not cause excessive symptoms unless something else is affecting your system.

I recommend a complete medical evaluation, including:

  1. A physical exam.

  2. Blood tests (including complete blood count, thyroid function, and electrolytes).

  3. ECG (electrocardiogram).

If these symptoms worsen or you feel dizzy, short of breath, or experience chest pain, please seek medical attention immediately.

I hope this answer helps you.

Thank you.
