Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a cricketer and have oily skin. I am playing in the sun and getting more tanned. What should I do? Please suggest skin care and sunscreen.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
As a cricketer spending long hours under the sun, tanning is expected, especially with oily skin, but it can definitely be controlled with the right routine. Repeated ultraviolet exposure increases melanin production, leading to tanning and uneven skin tone, and oily skin can further worsen issues like acne and clogged pores if heavy products are used.
The most important step in your case is correct sunscreen use, not just any sunscreen occasionally.
Use a broad-spectrum, gel-based sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 50, protection grade of UVA that suits oily skin.
Apply 20 minutes before going out.
Reapply every two to three hours, especially during matches.
Choose a water- and sweat-resistant formula.
Reapply after heavy sweating.
For daily skincare, keep it simple to avoid breakouts.
Use a gentle foaming face wash twice daily to control oil without over-drying.
In the morning, after face wash, apply a light layer of a depigmenting cream like Tyrodin cream (Tranexamic acid) only on tanned areas, followed by sunscreen.
Avoid layering too many actives under the sun, as this can irritate your skin.
At night, you should use:
Use Glycolic acid 12 percent cream on alternate nights.
This contains Glycolic Acid, which helps in gradual tan removal and improves skin texture.
Do not use it daily initially, as overuse can irritate.
On other nights, use a light, oil-free moisturizer to maintain skin balance.
Also, adopt physical protection methods like:
Wear a cap or a helmet visor while playing.
Use a clean towel to wipe sweat instead of rubbing your face.
Avoid harsh scrubs or frequent face washing during the day, as this can trigger more oil production.
With consistent sunscreen use and gentle night care, you will start noticing a reduction in tanning and better skin clarity within three to four weeks. The biggest mistake athletes make is relying only on creams while neglecting sunscreen reapplication. Fix that, and you will see the most improvement.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
