What are the risks of pregnancy termination methods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello, doctor,

My last menstrual period began last month on the 16th and lasted for six days. I had intercourse on the 28th, and now, with my period not having arrived by the 21st, I took a pregnancy test, which returned a positive result. I am currently pregnant and would like to explore options for terminating the pregnancy.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Thank you for explaining your situation clearly. You have taken an important step by reaching out. I understand that this may feel overwhelming right now, but you are not alone, and there are safe ways to manage this. Based on the information you provided, your last period began on the 16th, and you had sexual contact on the 28th. Today’s date is the 21st, which means you are likely four to five weeks pregnant (measured from the first day of your last period).

If you want to end the pregnancy, there are early abortion options available. The medical abortion (pill method) involves two medications, Mifepristone and Misoprostol, which can be taken either at home or under medical supervision. Bleeding and cramping are normal, and this method is highly effective in early pregnancy.

The surgical abortion (in-clinic) method is done by a gynecologist using suction, typically under local anesthesia. It is a quick procedure that is both safe and effective. What you should do right now is visit a gynecologist or women's health clinic immediately. Confirm the pregnancy through an ultrasound, check how many weeks along you are, and get professional guidance and safe treatment.

You must not attempt to take any abortion pills on your own without proper advice, as this can be dangerous. It is important to share your emotional state with the doctor, especially considering your recent mental health struggles. They will provide you with the necessary support and privacy and may offer counseling if you wish to talk to someone.

Please do not attempt to take any pills from a pharmacy without a prescription or the guidance of a doctor. Unsafe abortion can lead to heavy bleeding, infection, incomplete abortion (which may require surgery), and future fertility risks.

If you need help finding a clinic or gynecologist nearby, I can assist you by looking up options based on your city or country. Alternatively, I can help you prepare questions for your doctor. You are strong for reaching out, and you have every right to make the decision that feels best for you. However, it is crucial to do so safely and with the proper medical support.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
