What is the cause of skin redness and warmth 4 days after a testosterone injection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I administered a testosterone injection into my abdominal fat four days ago, and I have noticed that over the past two days, the area has become warm, and there is a redness around it. I am a 38-year-old male, 6 feet tall, and weigh 196 pounds. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

This can occur due to incorrect injection placement. No need to worry as it will improve. I suggest applying Thrombophob ointment (Heparin 50.0 IU and Benzyl nicotinate 2 mg) twice daily for three days; it should resolve. Consult your doctor and take the medication accordingly. If not, contact me after three days. Do you notice any lumps or swelling? Any pain? Keep me informed.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

It is a bit tender when touched, quite itchy, and there is a lump beneath the swelling. I have also administered another injection on the opposite side of my stomach, and it is produced a similar reaction.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I can observe in the pictures (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), the rash is a result of the injection. I suggest to avoid injecting in this area. As mentioned earlier, I suggest to apply Thrombophob ointment (Heparin 50.0 IU and Benzyl nicotinate 2 mg) twice daily. Also, take one tablet of Levocetirizine 10 mg before bedtime for three days. It should provide relief. Consult your doctor and take the medication accordingly.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I have been following your cream recommendation, but it does not appear to be very effective. Nevertheless, I will continue using it. I just want to confirm that there is no infection or allergic reaction, and it is safe to continue the subcutaneous testosterone injections in the belly. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

It does not seem infected, but it could indicate a mild allergic reaction. I have prescribed Levocetirizine for that. Try injecting on the other side, and if you still experience the same reaction, I recommend discontinuing the injection and informing me later. If you experience any other symptoms, please inform me.

Could you also let me know the reason for using testosterone? What is your purpose for taking it?

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
