Can Tezepelumab help manage severe allergic asthma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had severe allergic asthma for years, and my symptoms have worsened despite using inhalers and allergy medications. My previous doctor recommended trying Tezspire. Could you explain how Tezspire works differently from other biologics used for allergic asthma? How soon after starting Tezspire might I notice a reduction in symptoms? Are there any known long-term side effects or risks associated with this medication?

Should I continue using my current inhalers and allergy treatments while taking Tezspire? If I respond well to it, is Tezspire typically used as a long-term treatment or only during flare-ups?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your situation.

Tezspire (Tezepelumab) is a prescription medicine used alongside other asthma medications for the maintenance treatment of severe asthma in individuals aged 12 years and older whose asthma is not adequately controlled with their current medication. Tezepelumab helps prevent severe asthma attacks (exacerbations) and can improve breathing.

Tezepelumab begins to work after the first dose, typically around two weeks after administration. However, it may take several weeks to months to notice a significant improvement in symptoms.

Possible side effects of Tezepelumab:

  1. Hives.
  2. Injection site reactions.
  3. Back pain.
  4. Breathing problems.
  5. Arthralgia (joint pain).
  6. Sore throat.
  7. Anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction).
  8. Red, itchy, swollen, or inflamed eyes.

Tezepelumab is intended for long-term treatment. The decision to continue therapy should be reassessed at least annually based on the patient’s level of asthma control. Patients with a history of anaphylaxis should be monitored for an appropriate duration after each administration.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you for using iCliniq. Have a great day!
