How effective is Tezspire for severe asthma treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My dad (59) has had chronic asthma for years, but his chest x-ray reports just came back worse than before. He has been on inhalers and steroids for a long time but is still struggling with breathing. His pulmonologist suggested Tezspire, but we do not know much about it.

  1. How effective is this for severe asthma?

  2. Any serious side effects?

  3. Also, will he need to continue other meds alongside it, or can he stop inhalers?

  4. How soon can we see improvements if it works?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Tezspire (Tezepelumab) is a relatively new medication for severe asthma. It works by targeting a specific pathway involved in the inflammatory process of asthma, which can help reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks. Clinical trials have shown that Tezspire can effectively improve asthma control and reduce the need for oral corticosteroids.

However, like any medication, Tezspire can have side effects. Common ones include sore throat, joint pain, and back pain. Serious side effects are rare but can include allergic reactions. It is important to monitor and report any new symptoms to the doctor.

Your dad may still need to use other asthma medications, such as inhalers, alongside Tezspire, especially in the initial stages of treatment. The goal is to gradually reduce the reliance on other medications as asthma control improves. Improvements can be seen within a few weeks, but it may take a few months to achieve optimal results.

Kindly consult a physician, discuss with them, and start taking the medications with their consent.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
