What are the side effects of Tezepelumab?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 52-year-old wife has been taking Tezspire for asthma. While her breathing has improved, she has started breaking out in hives all over her body. She has never had allergies before, so we are concerned that this could be a reaction to Tezspire. Could this be a side effect, or is it unrelated? Should she continue the injections?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am sorry to hear about your concerns.

Since your 52-year-old wife has been on Tezspire (Tezepelumab) for asthma and is now experiencing widespread hives, it is important to consider a possible allergic reaction or side effect.

1. Could Tezepelumab cause hives?

Tezepelumab can cause hypersensitivity reactions, including rash, itching, and hives, though these side effects are rare. Hives could also be unrelated, potentially triggered by stress, infections, or new exposures. Additionally, delayed allergic reactions can occur, even if she initially tolerated the first few doses.

2. What to do next?

  1. Monitor symptoms closely: If the hives worsen, spread to the face, or are accompanied by swelling, breathing difficulties, or dizziness, seek emergency care immediately.
  2. Try antihistamines: Non-drowsy options like Cetirizine (Zyrtec) or Loratadine (Claritin) may also help reduce itching and discomfort.
  3. Consult her doctor before the next injection: If symptoms persist, her doctor may pause treatment, adjust the dosage, or consider an alternative asthma therapy.
  4. Consider allergy testing: testing may help rule out other potential triggers and determine whether Tezspire is the cause.

3. Should she continue the injections?

If the hives are mild and improving, she may continue treatment under medical supervision. However, if they persist or worsen, she should stop the injections until her doctor evaluates the reaction.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
