Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 19-year-old son's asthma has gotten completely out of control this year. He is using his rescue inhaler 5+ times daily and has been to the ER twice this month despite being on the highest doses of both Flovent (Fluticasone, a steroid for asthma) and Singulair (Montelukast, an asthma drug). His pulmonologist suggested adding Tezspire (Tezepelumab, a drug for severe asthma) injections every month, but our insurance is demanding that we try Xolair ( Omalizumab, an injectable drug for asthma)first. I have researched both, and Tezspire seems better for his specific type of asthma. He is starting college next month, and I am terrified he'll have a severe attack in his dorm with nobody to help him. Can you explain why Tezspire might work when other treatments have not? Is it worth fighting the insurance company over this specific medication? His breathing tests show his lung function is down to 65%, and I am done watching him struggle.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
I appreciate your concern. Tezspire (Tezepelumab, a drug for severe asthma) is a recently developed biologic treatment for eosinophilic asthma. It is considered safe for long-term use as it inhibits the inflammatory cascade triggered by chemokines and cytokines. Therefore, it is essential to first check the IgE levels and eosinophil count. Tezspire will only be effective if these levels are elevated. The medication is administered once every 28 days.
I hope this information helps you.
Feel free to ask further queries.
Thank you.
