How to prevent tick-borne diseases in children?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am concerned about my daughter’s health. I am afraid of tick-borne illness. How to prevent such illness? What are the precautionary measures to be taken? If contracted an illness, what is the first step to be followed? Is there any vaccine available?
Please help.
Thank you
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I went through your query and understood your concern.
To minimize the risk of tick bites and tick-borne illnesses, I suggest you follow the instructions mentioned below.
1. Wear long sleeves and long pants, and tuck pants into socks.
2. Light-colored clothing makes it easier to spot ticks.
3. Use repellents.
4. Stay on well-trodden paths and avoid tall grasses and dense vegetation where ticks are common.
5. After outdoor activities, thoroughly check your body, clothing, and gear for ticks.
6. Pay special attention to the scalp, behind the ears, underarms, and groin area.
7. Shower within two hours of coming indoors to wash off unattached ticks.
8. If a tick is found attached to the skin, it should be removed promptly using fine-tipped tweezers. After removing the tick, clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub, or soap and water.
9. Watch for symptoms such as rash, fever, chills, fatigue, muscle aches, and joint pain.
Currently, there is no available human vaccine for Lyme disease. I suggest you get yourself physically examined by a doctor.
Hope it helps.
Thank you.
