What could be the reason for redness after a cut in the toe?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I cut my toe early this morning, it was bleeding and has significant redness to it, you can see flesh. I cannot put pressure on it or move it without causing excruciating pain.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It looks like the picture you shared is an ulcer on your big toe. Any history of diabetes that I should know?

Possible cause:

It can be an infected blister or friction wound due to tight shoes or prolonged walking, blisters that ruptured and got infected. I can also see signs of inflammation like redness in the area and pain.

The management will be

  1. Control infection.

  2. Reduce inflammation and pain.

  3. Promote wound healing.

  4. Clean the area with normal saline, povidone, or iodine.

  5. Apply antibiotic ointment, Mupirocin or Fusidic acid, twice daily.

  6. Cover the wound with sterile dressing.

  7. Use NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Capsule Brufen 400 milligrams once daily.

I hope this has helped you.

Please feel free to reach me again in case of further queries.

Thank you.
