Can a pharyngeal bump indicate a serious condition?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had one little bump on the posterior pharyngeal pillar for three months with no pain

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Hope you have recovered well after your recent bout of tonsillitis.

I have reviewed the image, and it appears to show a small grade 1 tonsil with no signs of infection at present. This can normally be seen in 10 to 15 percent of adults and is usually present on both sides. However, if the tonsil is unilateral or asymmetric, further investigation and management are necessary to rule out malignancy (cancer), as per current guidelines, even though it does not appear clinically sinister. Additionally, please monitor for any increase in size, bleeding, or ulceration, as these could indicate malignant transformation. Any recurrent tonsillitis, defined as more than seven episodes in one year, more than five episodes per year for two consecutive years, or more than two episodes per year for three consecutive years is an indication of tonsillectomy, according to the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines.

Please provide images of both tonsils together for further clarification and assessment. A detailed history of past treatments and conditions, including any history of cancer or smoking, would also be helpful. Kindly follow up at the earliest with the requested images and medical history for a more comprehensive evaluation.

I hope I have solved your query.

Thank you.
