Will taking pain medicines during pregnancy affect the baby in any way?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am currently 30 weeks pregnant. I am scheduled to get my wisdom tooth extracted in a few days. My obstetrician gave my dentist the approval to prescribe analgesics for pain. But, I am worried since I have not taken anything for the pain my entire pregnancy besides Tylenol for headaches. My obstetrician also says Oxycodone is safe to take as I am allergic to other medicines. My question is if I take any pain medication during recovery, will it harm my baby? Will it affect the labor and delivery in any way?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The fear of congenital anomalies in the baby lasts till the 14th week of gestation, that is, till the organs are formed. Now that you are at the 30th week, where organs are well formed, Oxycodone may be used for pain relief, for less than a week. It will not have any effect on the baby's growth. However, Paracetamol should still be the preferred choice for pain relief otherwise.

Regards.
