Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am 18 years old. I had an old cavity that was filled a few years ago, but the filling broke and came out. Now, the infection has worsened, and the black cavity hole has become bigger and deeper. What should I do?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
Based on your description and the photos provided (attachment removed to protect patient identification), it looks like your upper first molar has a large cavity, which has caused the loss of part of the tooth and a previous filling to fail.
At this point, the tooth needs a thorough examination, including an X-ray, to determine how deep the decay is and if the nerve has been affected. If the decay is only in the outer layer of the tooth and the nerve is healthy, we may be able to repair the tooth without a root canal. In this case, we would look at more durable options than a simple filling, such as an inlay, onlay, or build-up, which can replace the missing part of the tooth and make it stronger.
These options offer greater strength and longevity than regular fillings. However, if the decay has reached the nerve or if there are signs of infection, then a root canal followed by a crown or cap would be necessary to save the tooth. If left untreated, the tooth could break down further, cause pain, or develop an abscess. The best next step is to take an X-ray so we can better assess the situation and decide if we can repair the tooth or if a root canal is needed.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
