Are there alternative treatments to manage the inflammation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have inflammation beneath the molars on both the right and left sides, as observed in the X-rays. While I do not experience severe pain or significant swelling, I feel discomfort, particularly due to food becoming trapped in open areas.

My dentist has suggested the possibility of root canal retreatment, which would involve cleaning the root canals and resealing the teeth, as well as addressing potential inflammation in the surrounding bone.

I would like to know your opinion on this treatment plan, whether alternative options are available, and if the inflammation can be treated without undergoing root canal retreatment.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

The X-ray indicates that both the left and right molars have undergone previous root canal treatment. However, the treatment was not performed perfectly, leading to inflammation beneath the teeth and loose fillings.

I completely agree that your dental retreatment is the best solution to preserve your teeth. This involves properly cleaning and resealing the root canals, followed by placing a crown over the treated teeth. Since teeth become more fragile after a root canal, a crown is essential to prevent breakage and provide protection.

The inflammation will not resolve on its own as long as the underlying cause, an improperly performed root canal, remains.

An alternative option, which I do not recommend, is tooth extraction. However, extraction is unnecessary in this case. Proceeding with root canal retreatment will effectively resolve the issue while preserving your natural teeth.

I hope this information helps you.

Please let us know if you have any further queries.

Thank you.
