Why do I have severe tooth pain, and how to treat it?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have tooth pain. I have tried everything to get rid of it, but nothing seems to be happening. I am willing to pay to get my tooth removed.

Could you please tell me why my tooth hurts? Currently, I am on Mebeverine hydrochloride for IBS.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern, and based on your description, it appears that your tooth has already progressed to a deep infection. Therefore, it is important that you see a dentist immediately without delay.

Your dentist may advise an intraoral periapical radiograph (IOPA), as this imaging helps in confirming the exact diagnosis and extent of the problem. Once done, you can also share a picture of your X-ray with us for further guidance.

From your explanation, the symptoms suggest that the tooth may require root canal treatment, as pulpal exposure typically causes severe pain of this nature. At this point, the choice lies with you, either to preserve your natural tooth through root canal treatment or to opt for extraction followed by replacement of the missing tooth.

While the cost of root canal treatment is generally higher than extraction initially, it helps preserve your natural tooth. In contrast, extraction creates a gap that will eventually need to be filled, so over time, the overall cost tends to balance out.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
