Can vaginitis be passed during sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had sex with a new guy. He got tested and was told he has vaginitis. He said he got it from me. I have no idea what vaginitis is. I looked it up on the internet to understand it. What should I do, doctor? Is it true that I gave it to him?

Please help me.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I am very sorry to hear about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying close attention to the changes in your body. But do not worry, I am here to take care of you.

Regarding your concern, trichomonas vaginitis is caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, which is a sexually transmitted infection. So it is possible that your spouse was infected through recent sexual contact.

Please get a high vaginal swab and an endocervical swab test done, and send me the results. In the meantime, you can start the following treatment:

  1. Injection Ceftriaxone 1 g (single dose).

  2. Doxycycline 100 mg, two tablets orally twice a day for two weeks.

  3. Metronidazole 400 mg, two tablets orally three times a day for two weeks.

If you need any more clarification or help with your questions, feel free to ask.

Thank you.
