Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am seeking advice for my sister-in-law, 42 years old, who is concerned about her risk for triple-negative breast cancer due to her family history. She wants to know more about the screening process, particularly for early detection.
Can you provide information on the most effective screening methods for triple-negative breast cancer, including any advanced imaging techniques or genetic testing? Additionally, guidance on how often she should be screened, given her family history, and recommended specialists or screening centers in the area would be greatly appreciated.
Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Factors that may increase the risk of breast cancer include:
1. A family history of breast cancer.
2. A personal history of breast cancer.
3. A personal history of breast conditions.
4. Beginning your period at a younger age.
5. Beginning menopause at an older age.
6. Dense breast tissue.
7. Drinking alcohol.
8. Age: Premenopausal women and those under the age of 50 have an increased risk of triple-negative breast cancer.
9. BRCA1 gene (breast cancer type 1) mutation: About 70 percent of the breast cancers diagnosed in women with an inherited BRCA1 mutation are TNBC (triple negative breast cancer).
10. Ethnicity: African American and Hispanic women have a higher rate of triple-negative breast cancers.
Regarding screening, she should go for genetic testing for BRCA 1 and 2, ultrasound, and digital mammography of the bilateral breast. In case she has a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, then she has to undergo screening every two to three years. In case triple-negative breast cancer is detected at an early stage, the cure rate is very high.
I hope this information helps you.
