How to effectively manage tuberculosis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 48-year-old male. I have had a severe cough in my chest. I consulted my doctor, got a chest X-ray with other blood investigations, and was diagnosed with tuberculosis. I am not a smoker, but how did I get this? I am depressed after hearing this. Could I be able to survive like other people with this health issue? What life-threatening complications will occur when tuberculosis is left untreated? How to manage this tuberculosis effectively? How to protect my family from getting this infection?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

From your description, you have tuberculosis (TB), an infectious bacterial illness caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that mostly affects the lungs (and occasionally other regions of the body).

Firstly, do not be depressed at all. TB is a treatable disease that is amenable to cure. There is every chance that, with complete treatment, you will lead an unaffected life.

TB is spread by droplet infection (Infection spreads via airborne droplets of saliva or sputum carrying infectious germs). While smokers have increased chances of developing the disease and its complications, even non-smokers are susceptible to the disease.

Now, you must take complete treatment as advised by the doctor. With full treatment, there is a chance of a full recovery. With partial or no treatment, TB can cause severe complications.

The treatment plan includes:

ATT (Antituberculosis treatment).

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
